Artist Statement: The odometer tells of how many stories the rusted steel has experienced, who’s sat in the seats, what’s played on the stereo. How many hands have created the comforting indents on the wheel I know and hold in my hands?

Artist Statement: My piece depicts a man putting a ring on a woman’s finger, symbolizing marriage and love lasting forever.  I felt it was important to include a materialistic, boastful type of love, or stage of love, in my pieces, because it’s typically how girls are raised, to envision marriage and commitment and being proud of a love “achievement”.

Maya Thoni, 11th Grade, "Worldview"
Maya Thoni, 11th Grade, “Worldview”

Artist Statement: I drew a distorted world map at an unusual angle in the back and then used color to fill in the red location pins, and the open eye. This pop of color is meant to highlight the central point of my piece. How places open your eyes.

Artist Statement: In this piece I was exploring negative and positive space and tonal shading. I used the shadows to contrast the lighter parts of the landscape. The darker outlines emphasize the different shades of the buildings.

Artist Statement: This piece was inspired by the trip I took to Hawaii with my family. We were at this really cool restaurant where we could feed the koi fish and it was just a very peaceful experience. I used only a 4b pencil which is my favorite thing I use to do art. In the future I plan to spend a lot of my time in nature and find my inner peace, so this art represents that.

Henry Chapin, 12th Grade, "Untitled"
Henry Chapin, 12th Grade, “Untitled”

Artist Statement: Kid Cudi is a well-known musical artist who drastically changed how people view hip hop. A small artist largely inspired this piece I found on Pinterest whose name is unknown. My goal was to challenge my ability to create realism using tone and value. I drew lighter and darker parts of the piece to produce emotion and accurate facial features. The most challenging part of creating the work was detailing the transparent effect of the smoke on the face. I feel the piece ended up being a success in achieving my goal.

Kaz Poppe, 12th Grade, "Untitled"

Artist Statement: Creating the illusion of depth and reality within my art drives me to refine my drawing abilities. In this piece , I focused on the illusion of light bending through the glass of water, creating a secondary image within the water, The exaggerated curves and bends of the water were hard to work with but in the end , rewarding.

Artist Statement: This piece is an observation of history. History teaches us about our experience of humanity. I use stones to represent some immutable laws and bullets to represent the violent side of our narrative. Flowers represent the enduring ability for people to survive and adapt. In this piece I am asking the question, can humanity build better for its future? I used colored pencils, charcoal, and carbon pencil. This was a self directed project.
